Holland College of Arts and Media’s (HCAM) Diversity Committee hosts an event each spring in honor of Black History Month and Women’s History Month. The Departments of Art + Design, Music, and Theater & Dance encourage and assist students in presenting in the showcase. The Department of Art + Design’s efforts are lead by the Diversity in Curriculum Committee, on which I have served as member and co-chair.
In 2021, I helped lead efforts to create a book with folios designed by our department students. A handout was created with information about Smelterville, an historic neighborhood in the Southside of Cape Girardeau. Supplemental resources were provided to instructors in the department who volunteered to include the project in their classes, including readings, images, and prompts for student endgagement.
I led my own AR502 Lithography students in creating folios using screenprinting and lithographic printmaking processes, and I personally created the cover and hand bound the volume in coptic stitch binding technique.
Video on Book
I created this video about the process to be shown at the event, and the book was also on display outside the Rose Theater in Grauel Building and later in the ARX Hallway Gallery at the Arts Annex on River Campus at Southeast Missouri State University (SEMO).
